Village and Surroundings
Scherwiller is beautifully located in central Alsace, on the Wine Route. Both the Salt Route and the Roman Route once went through the village and 2 Roman stones remind us of that.
Scherwiller is also at the cross roads of 2 very well known and popular trails: the GR5 and the Saint-Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimage route. Scherwiller, a very flowery wine making village, is mostly known for its Riesling – Riesling de Scherwiller – promoted by the Rieslinger Brotherhood and all the wine makers in the village.
Take a stroll through Scherwiller, and you’ll discover the banks of the Aubach river where women until just a few decades ago did their laundry. You will also see beautiful half-timbered houses from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries; one of which is the breathtaking “Corps de Garde” which is the current home of the local tourism center.
The Ortenbourg and Ramstein castles, dating back from the 12th century, overlook Scherwiller. The castles are accessible through a nice walk through the vineyards and up a “little†mountain! Scherwiller and Kientzville, have a combined population of 2911 inhabitants. Kientzvillle, which is an annexe to Scherwiller is located 1 mile from the “city center†and was originally founded in 1946 by one man: Robert Kientz. He was the owner of a textile factory in Scherwiller and built houses for his workers in an area that he then called Kientzville. The factory is no longer in production today and became the home of the Emmaus community.
Scherwiller’s twin city is a little town in nearby Germany called Fautenbach. The nickname for inhabitants of Scherwiller is “Rammasserhelda” which means the “king of the pruning knife”.
